It is enough to shop around any waterfront in the Costa del Sol to see it, but now it appears also in the Times: Spain is no longer foreing enough for the British taste. The funny thing is that what tourist critic, has come from themselves.
Walking in Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Puerto Banus and Torremolinos, is immersed in a maze of pubs, fish & chips, Bakeries and others that populate the streets of this part of the Spanish coast (and I know that it is not the only) to supply the preference of most of the tourists who come to these shores.
A lot of these shops are run by foreign residents. Those Brits, Germans, Dutchmen, Swedes, Italians, Norwegians, Belgians, Russians, etc. Who decided to change the fog, snow or rain by the Andalusian Mediterranean sun (in this case).
And they and their customers who fill the terraces of its bars and British restaurants, look very happy here, celebrating the happy hour or some sport event. No wonder, groups meet (beer in hand) in a pub celebrating a victory for their cricket or rugby team.
It's true. But it is true also that the enormous diversity of services for both residents and visitors don´t hide the authentic Spanish flavor. It is easily found. In a healthy coexistence, we can choose between Cumberland sausages or Jabugo ham.
In the article mentioned in the Times (British tourists avoid Spain because it's 'no longer foreign enough') say that 59% of respondents (1,327 people ) in an interview are in agreement with the article.
However, 32% also recognized as the familiar service makes them feel much more comfortable.
In the reduction of British visitors' entrance to this Spanish area, I think that its about the fall in purchasing power of the pound against the euro. Spain has become more expensive for them, but still have everything they want: sun, good weather, varied services, beach, golf, their own spaces, a short ride from home. And they have their bars to follow the Premier League.
And those looking for more "Spanish flavor", they have it easy. Alongside the pub is the tapas bar. And moving a few miles from the coast, it will be another Spain, but this will have to leave the boardwalk and bars.
Despite the opinion of some of those 1,327 people, Spain continues to occupy the first places among the most popular destinations for Britons.
